since bluesky (the company) is doing silly things again, here's a thread blog post of some things you can do to help widen the gap between bluesky (the company) and bluesky (the platform)...

migrate PDS

Your account data is stored on a Personal Data Server (PDS). Most signed up with Bluesky and therefore use their PDS. If you have a 24/7 server though, you can run your own. or you can migrate to someone else's. i run one (hmu if you're interested!), my friends over at synth.download run one, and many others do too, too many to list (and i worry about credibility of some if i were to list)

edit: You can also move to
Wafrn! It's a cool platform that mixes fedi with bluesky, all in a tumblr style layout. very anti AI, indie, and queer, much love to their team there. It'll be a whole different experience, but will distance you more than just a normal PDS switch, while still keeping your followers and connections on Bluesky.

use a 3rd party client

This one doesn't move any of your data, it just changes how you access Bluesky. These exist to present the platform to you differently, often with added features or tweaks. WitchSky, tenna.party, and NightSky are all cool imo

These next ones require using a 3rd party client

use a different CDN

A CDN (content distribution network, though the term is used loosely for bluesky) sits between your client and PDSs to grab images faster for you. By default you'd use cdn.bsky.app, but you can tweak 3rd party clients to use different ones like cdn.at.protogen.nexus (i run this too!), porxie-bsky.dollware.net, or cdn.blueat.network

use a different appview

okay now we're breaking shit. from my understanding, an appview creates an index of everything on the network, so that clients can call it for quicker data retrieval.

bluesky's is the only one (that i know of) that's caught up and has all the data. blacksky and mu have their own that you can switch to in witchsky and tenna.party, but they are missing data, so some numbers might look off, some accounts might be missing, etc.

there's also appview-less clients like
Red Dwarf and NightSky, so using those gives you more independence from bluesky (the company) in a different way. you do trade that for a bit of jank though in my experience.

disclaimers

i think that's all so here's some notes. yes i run The Protogen Nexus and host alternate atproto services there. i don't gain anything from people using those services though. they are free and i wouldn't know how to sell your data if i wanted to.

also, this is also all just going off my knowledge and understanding of atproto/bluesky. much of it has been simplified for quicker reading and to try to make things more approachable for those that aren't familiar with the ins and outs of atproto. i could be wrong or missing important info, or maybe there's even more you can do to distance yourself from the PBC. if so, please do say in the comments !
